MANAGUA is the
nation's capital that has 1,352 square miles. This is located in the lowlands, so the
climate is hot particularly in April and May, reaching temperatures between 89-95 grados
F. Managua means "where there is an extension of water" and it became a city in
1846 and the capital city in 1852.
Managua's pattron is Santo Domingo, celebrated between August 1 and 10 with the
traditional procession of bringing and returning the Saint to Sierritas.
GRANADA Founded in 1524 by the conquistador Hernandez de Cordoba, Granada is 29
miles from Managua. This is one of the cities with greatest tourist potencial in all of
Latin America.
The city is a port on the shores of Lake of Nicaragua, making possible to enjoy beach and
water activities. Great for fishing, the lake has many species among which are the
sweetwater shark and the sawfish.
MASAYA Located 17 miles from Managua, it is the smallest department and the most
densely populated. The "City of the Flowers" is the heart of national folklore.
The tourist attractions are the Masaya volcano National park, Apoyo Lagoon, Malecon de
Masaya, and Coyotepe.
RIVAS Located 70 miles south of Managua, it is rich in farming production and
animal husbandry. The Rivas isthmus is the narrowest of the American Continent and a log
time ago it was considered to be ideal spot for an interoceanic canal.
LEON Located 56 miles from Managua, it was founded in 1524 by Hernandez de
Cordoba. During many years Leon was Nicaragua's main political, military, cultural and
religious center. This is the birthplace of notorious men: Ruben Dario, Salomon de la
Selva, Alfonso Cortez, Jose de la Cruz Mena, and Miguel de Larraynaga.
CARAZO Located 43 miles from Managua, Jinotepe its capital city. this was the
land of the Chorotegas who divided in to two groups: Dirianes and the Nagrandanos.
The main production of this region is coffee because of the Carazo's cool climate.
ESTELI One of the most importan segovian cities in the north of Nicaragua,
surrounded by montainous scenery for the tourist to enjoy and great for its dairy
livestock.
This is an Agricultural city that produces basic grains and tobacco, which is of excellent
quality manufactured mostly for export. The most important city of Esteli is La Trinidad,
which is located 24 KM from Esteli. This is best known because of "La cueva de la
Mocuana".
MATAGALPA Located in the midnorth part of the country it has been called " The
pearl of the Septentrion". Matagalpa is the major coffee producer, it also produces
vegeetables, beans, and rice.
CHINANDEGA Founded in 1858, Chinandega is the second major western city. It has the
largest sugar mill of the country- San Antonio. Tourist attractions: Cosiguina Volcano,
Jiquilillo, and Cosiguina Cliffs.
NUEVA SEGOVIA Ocotal is the capital of this department that borders with Honduras.
There are gold, silver, and germstone mines as well as marble quarries.
JINOTEGA The second larguest department, Jinotega is located 3,300 feet above sea
level. Jinotega is surrounded by pine forests and coffee plantations. Four rivers
cross it: Coco, Bocay, Tuma, and rio Viejo.
MADRIZ Its capital is Somoto. Madriz is a colorful city surrounded by hills that
is crossed by rivers Coco and esteli. The Somotean ring-shaped corn pastries are famous in
Nicaragua and a great complement to a cup of coffee.
CHONTALES The capital city of this cattle and dairy producer department is Juigalpa.
Its Chontalean cheeses have great national demand. The Escondido river originates here,
and together with the Siquia, Mico, and Rama rivers, it forms the main river artery to the

BOACO It is primarily a cattle and dairy region, producer of milk and cream
cheese.
RIO SAN JUAN Rio Sn Juan is the most attractive reserve that Nicaragua offers to
ecotourists. Tourist attractions: San Carlos, and the Solentiname Archipelago.
ATLANTIC COAST Having the lowest population density factor in the country, it is covered
by dense tropical jungles where access roads and rivers. Its population is mainly black,
decendants of African slaves.
